In Nevada, you must pass three official tests (and meet some other requirements) for driving privileges: a vision test, a knowledge test on driving theory, and a skills (road) test. The vision and knowledge tests are also required for an instruction permit to practice driving under supervision. You may take the knowledge test online or at a DMV office. If you are under 18, you must obtain an instruction permit before the skills test. An instruction permit is not required if you’re at least 18 years old, but you can get one to practice supervised driving if you need to. If you choose not to obtain a permit, you cannot drive until you pass the skills test.
If you’re under 18, you have more requirements to meet. You must provide proof of school attendance. Before applying for an intermediate license (the next step in graduated driver licensing), you must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 at night. You must also complete a DMV-approved driver education course, either in person or online. If neither of these course options is available to you, you must complete an additional 50 hours of supervised driving practice.
All questions on the official knowledge test are based on information in the official Nevada DMV driver’s 2025 handbook (Nevada DMV Handbook (NV Driver's Manual) 2025). This manual is available in English and Spanish versions and can be easily downloaded from this webpage in PDF format.
We have also created an audiobook of the English version of the official driver’s handbook. It’s formatted as a downloadable series of MP3 files covering every chapter of the manual: Getting Your License, Buckle Up, Driving Safely, and so on. The longest file is Chapter 3: Driving Safely, whose running time is 55 minutes, 18 seconds. The audiobook has a total running time of 3 hours, 9 minutes, and 25 seconds, so you should be able to go through it in a few days.
Worried that you won’t be alert enough to pass the knowledge test? Or that you’ll be too nervous and freeze up? We can help with this too! In addition to the official handbook, we also offer our own permit test study guide to help you prepare for the big test day. It covers how to prepare your mind and body for the test, what documents to take with you, what fees you may have to pay, and frequently missed test questions.
Nevada has made it easier to get a license by allowing you to take both the official knowledge test and the driver education course online. Residents of many other states aren’t as fortunate!
